ADHRB submits a review to the UN on child rights in Saudi Arabia

Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) recently submitted a review on the Government of Saudi Arabia’s adherence to commitments outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC), a treaty to which Saudi Arabia is a party. Saudi Arabia continues to commit a number of violations against children in the country. Most notably, Saudi Arabia issues death penalties against those who allegedly commit crimes as minors. The government also denies those convicted as minors access to a lawyer. Many of the charges for which minors in Saudi Arabia are convicted violate children’s rights to freedom of expression, which are guaranteed in the UN-CRC. ADHRB finds that the Government of Saudi Arabia does not abide by the UN-CRC. Saudi authorities must cease the practice of issuing the death penalty against those convicted of crimes as minors and investigate allegations of torture against minors in detention.
