Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) fosters awareness of and support for democracy and human rights in Bahrain and the Middle East.

Husain Abdulla

MA | Executive Director

Husain Abdulla, originally from Bahrain, is the founder and Executive Director of Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) and the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD). As a direct result of his advocacy and human rights work the Bahraini government in November of 2012 in an act of reprisal arbitrarily revoked his Bahraini citizenship. As Executive Director, Husain leads the organization’s efforts to ensure that US policies support the democracy and human rights movement in Bahrain. Husain also works closely with members of the Bahraini-American community to ensure that their voices are heard by US government officials and the broader American public. Husain directs ADHRB’s international advocacy efforts in fifteen different European capitals and cities in an effort to build international pressure on Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and other GCC countries to end human rights violations and culture of impunity.

Salma Moussawi

Head of Legal Advocacy & Documentation

As a head of legal advocacy and documentation Salma supports ADHRB’s work in documenting human rights abuses in GCC countries. Then uses the documentations to design different legal advocacy strategies to highlights human rights violations and abuses in the GCC region. Salma lead and direct ADHRB’s legal work and communications with international organizations. Before joining ADHRB Salma worked for years at different organizations advocating for freedom of expression and end to culture of impunity in the region.

Mawadda Iskandar

Media Coordinator

Through her work in the field of journalism and scientific research, Mawadda works on proposing and writing topics related to human rights issues in the Gulf countries, in addition to designing and implementing various advocacy strategies stemming from ADHRB documents and reports and publishing on social media platforms. She works to activate cooperation between the organization and various partner organizations to prepare joint campaigns, in addition to building relationships with governments and legislative councils in order to strategically enhance the impact of the organization’s efforts.

International Reach

ADHRB has a broad network of passionate and dedicated volunteers and supporters around the world, including in Washington DC and European capitals who work tirelessly to advocate for human rights and democracy in Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
