At UN, ADHRB Spotlights Prevalence of Torture in Saudi Criminal Justice System

Geneva, Switzerland — 22 September 2015 — On behalf of Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain, advocacy associate Eric Eikenberry delivered an oral intervention at the 30th session of the Human Rights Council. The intervention addressed the systematic use of torture within the criminal justice system of Saudi Arabia. In particular, the intervention highlighted Saudi authorities’ use of torture to secure a confession from Ali al-Nimr, a Saudi citizen later sentenced to death based on this coerced testimony. It also drew attention to the Saudi government’s imprisonment of activists who publicized cases of torture to the international community. An Arabic version of the intervention can be accessed here.
